OVERSIZED ITEM

Designed by Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen in 1953, the Model FD 145 lounge chair was produced in Denmark by France & Daverkosen. The design is documented as part of the firm’s 1950s seating production and is characterized by a solid wood frame, loose upholstered cushions, and an open spindle back.

This example features a stained birch frame with long, curved armrests that extend from the back of the chair to the tapered front supports. The frame incorporates a series of slender vertical spindles across the back and a metal support system beneath the removable seat cushion. The legs are tapered and finished with contrasting dark tips.

The chair retains separate seat and back cushions, newly upholstered in a neutral wool bouclé. The textured upholstery contrasts with the dark stained frame while leaving the chair’s shaped arms, spindle construction, and open back fully visible. Viewed from the side, the angled rear supports and reclined back establish a low lounge seating position, while the broad arms and gently curved top rail give the frame its distinctive profile.
