Designed by John Keal for Brown Saltman, the “Outrigger” coffee table is an early example of organic American modern furniture design from the 1950s. This sculptural form features Keal’s signature asymmetrical top paired with an exposed architectural base, balancing biomorphic shaping with clean structural lines.
The table retains its original composite, plywood biomorphic top, showcasing a dense variegated surface with warm amber, tan, and dark brown tonal variation throughout. The freeform top is supported by a solid wood outrigger-style base with rounded leg forms, angled stretchers, and visible dowel supports. The contrast between the textured plywood surface and smooth wood framework highlights the material-driven approach commonly associated with Brown Saltman production during the period.
Its elongated profile works well as a central coffee table while maintaining a relatively light visual footprint due to the open base construction.
