Florence Knoll 'Relaxed' Settee in Leather

Designed by Florence Knoll in 1954, the Florence Knoll Lounge Collection is defined by a rectilinear profile, exposed metal frame, and upholstered geometric cushions. The Relaxed version modifies the original design with deeper proportions and softer cushioning while retaining the structural format of the original collection. Knoll specifies a solid wood inner frame, spring seat suspension, multi-density foam cushioning, and a heavy-gauge steel exterior frame with a polished chrome finish.

This two-seat example is upholstered throughout in tan leather, including the seat and back cushions, exterior back, sides, arms, and lower body. The two individual seat cushions and two back cushions feature stitched grid tufting, while matching piping defines their perimeter edges. The back cushions are slightly reclined, and the upholstered rectangular arms extend nearly the full depth of the settee.

The upholstery is supported by an exposed polished chrome frame consisting of slender square-section legs connected by horizontal structural members along the sides and rear. The chrome structure remains visible beneath and behind the upholstered body, producing the raised configuration characteristic of the design. Knoll identifies polished heavy-gauge steel as the exposed frame material used for the Relaxed collection.

Compared with the standard Florence Knoll Lounge Collection, the Relaxed version is approximately three inches deeper and incorporates additional fiberfill in the tufted seat and back cushions.

The photographs show the leather with a consistent tan coloration and visible natural grain, neatly finished stitching, and matching piping throughout. The polished chrome frame shows minor surface wear consistent with use. The upholstery and cushions present cleanly, with light creasing and variation associated with leather and normal use.
